The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a bill today that would ban abortions on babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome before birth. The Pennsylvania state House approved the bill on a 117 to 76 vote – with Republicans generally supporting the bill to protect babies with Down Syndrome from abortion and Democrats voting to allow them to be killed in abortions.
Disability rights activist Karen Gaffney has swum the English Channel, holds an honorary doctorate, and is a nationally acclaimed speaker. In short, Karen, who has Down syndrome, has an amazing list of accomplishments on her resume. Yet, she knows that babies with the same disability that she has are targeted for abortion, simply based on a prenatal test that detects Down syndrome.
