Reg­is­tered Nurses are, per­haps, the best friends of a patient. Though they get paid for their job, the care and com­pas­sion that they pro­vide a patient is unpar­al­leled and remark­able. The nurs­ing arena gen­er­ally belongs to women, but more and more men are join­ing the pro­fes­sion. Nurs­ing is a career filled with end­less per­sonal and pro­fes­sional rewards. If a per­son chooses nurs­ing, they are choos­ing to spend their life help­ing oth­ers, using skills that blend sci­en­tific knowl­edge with com­pas­sion and car­ing. There are few pro­fes­sions that offer such a reward­ing com­bi­na­tion of high tech and high touch.

Nurs­ing is the nation’s largest health care pro­fes­sion with over 2.6 mil­lion Nurses, and with many more needed for the future. Nurses are the largest sin­gle com­po­nent of any hos­pi­tal staff– the pri­mary givers of hos­pi­tal patient care– and, they deliver most of the nation’s nurs­ing home care.

Nurs­ing is a blend of sci­ence and tech­nol­ogy with the art of car­ing and com­pas­sion. Every day on the job, nurses use the sci­ence they learned in Nurs­ing school. Nurses also take con­tin­u­ing edu­ca­tion courses on a reg­u­lar basis to keep up with the lat­est in the med­ical and nurs­ing sci­ences.

Nurses prac­tice wher­ever peo­ple need nurs­ing care, includ­ing such com­mon sites as hos­pi­tals, homes, schools, work­places, com­mu­nity cen­ters, and uncom­mon areas such as children’s camps, home­less shel­ters and tourist sites.

With the aging pop­u­la­tion grow­ing steadily, there will be no short­age of jobs for Nurses well into the future. In most parts of the coun­try the aver­age age for nurses is grow­ing, mean­ing the more nurses are retir­ing, thus fur­ther­ing the nurs­ing short­age. So as the cur­rent crop of nurses near retire­ment, fewer trained nurses are in the pipeline to replace them which trans­lates into more job oppor­tu­ni­ties with the poten­tial of higher start­ing salaries. There is no bet­ter time than now to start your quest for a ful­fill­ing and reward­ing career as a nurse!
