Thinking of Choosing a Nursing Career?
By: Rick Cates
The things that’s great about a Nursing Career is the range of opportunity for work and intellectual growth. There is clinical work, teaching, research and a melding of the three,” said Maureen Keefe, R.N., Ph.D.
Registered Nurses are, perhaps, the best friends of a patient. Though they get paid for their job, the care and compassion that they provide a patient is unparalleled and remarkable. The nursing arena generally belongs to women, but more and more men are joining the profession. Nursing is a career filled with endless personal and professional rewards. If a person chooses nursing, they are choosing to spend their life helping others, using skills that blend scientific knowledge with compassion and caring. There are few professions that offer such a rewarding combination of high tech and high touch.
Nursing is the nation’s largest health care profession with over 2.6 million Nurses, and with many more needed for the future. Nurses are the largest single component of any hospital staff– the primary givers of hospital patient care– and, they deliver most of the nation’s nursing home care.
Nursing is a blend of science and technology with the art of caring and compassion. Every day on the job, nurses use the science they learned in Nursing school. Nurses also take continuing education courses on a regular basis to keep up with the latest in the medical and nursing sciences.
Nurses practice wherever people need nursing care, including such common sites as hospitals, homes, schools, workplaces, community centers, and uncommon areas such as children’s camps, homeless shelters and tourist sites.
With the aging population growing steadily, there will be no shortage of jobs for Nurses well into the future. In most parts of the country the average age for nurses is growing, meaning the more nurses are retiring, thus furthering the nursing shortage. So as the current crop of nurses near retirement, fewer trained nurses are in the pipeline to replace them which translates into more job opportunities with the potential of higher starting salaries. There is no better time than now to start your quest for a fulfilling and rewarding career as a nurse!
